Dear Parents/Guardians,

Hope everyone is alright and coping with the many changes that are coming our way every single day.

It is a very trying time for everyone and many people in our school community face great worry and uncertainty in terms of their jobs, their elderly relatives and vulnerable friends, relatives, close family members with existing medical conditions and family abroad.

To have your children at home all day every day has put added pressure on many families while the children are probably still trying to digest the fact that they may not met up with their friends for some weeks yet.

Each class teacher will be in touch by email/Aladdin and will continue to update the work weekly by email while the school is closed. Please be assured that each staff member in Kanturk Girls N.S. is thinking of you and doing their best to support your children at this most difficult time.

Please take note of the following points:

  • Everybody needs to keep things in perspective-this isn’t homeschooling, this really is distance learning where each of us are trying our best to get through each day, one step at a time, one day at a time. Some days are better than others. The kitchen isn’t a classroom and your house may be one where people may be trying to work from home, parents may have lost their job or under any type of stress. We are in the middle of an unprecedented situation so be kind to yourself. There will be days when nothing gets done, and that’s ok too. Try again tomorrow.

  • We understand that some homes in Kanturk may have poor or no broadband and realise that in some homes, a parent working from home, a secondary school student studying for state exams, a third level student trying to get some work done, will all need to use the computer. If your child cannot get to use the computer very often, that is perfectly ok.

  • The life prospects, career success and educational achievements of your child will not be changed in any way by the amount of schoolwork your child gets done in these weeks of school shut down.  There are many valuable learning experiences to be had from home-tidying their room, filling the dishwasher,  playing outside, gardening, cooking, board games to name but a few. Be with them and assure them that everything will be alright. You are their parents and family members, not their teachers. Rest assured, that the staff in Kanturk Girls N.S. will look after your child and provide them with all the tools they need to succeed to the best of their ability when the time comes. For now, stay safe as a family. There is no expectation from your class teacher. The priority is that everyone takes care of themselves and their family.

  • Remember that you are doing enough and ‘enough is plenty’. The world is a scary place right now, full of so much uncertainty and fear and sometimes we just have to live in the present. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.  Remember this too shall pass.

  • Remember it’s important that if you can, you check the work that’s been done so a little work done well and checked is better than lots of unchecked work.

We are all unsure of what’s happening for now but as soon as we have any information re school opening we will contact you.

Finally please tell your children that we are thinking of them and that we will all be back to school to learn, play, laugh and of course get homework!  Please stay safe and remember ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile' (There is no strength without unity).

Kind Regards,

Derval Vaughan and Staff
