Green Schools 2019-2020

Our Green school committee is up and running now and we are preparing for a new flag. We are working towards the travel flag in 2021.

In the meantime our first job as greenschoolers was to visit the Kanturk recycling centre. Derek took us around the centre and the committee learned about what is recycled and what happens to stuff taken to the centre. the cirls brought their own recycling items to add to the collection.

Well done to Paige in 3rd class who wrote a fantastic poem about recycling.

Halloween recycling competition.- Now in its third year the entries this year were the best yet.... a huge response. Thanks to all the parents and guardians who helped out and well done to everyone who took part.

Nov/Dec- Thank you to all parents and guardians who completed our survey on travelling to school. These will be collated by our liason officer Ellen O Sullivan from An Taisce and we will have results and maps in January.

Energy Award- During November we had a competition to find the best energy saving classroom. WELL DONE to the finalists and to Rang a Sé who won.

JANUARY- Thanks to Ellen who returned with our survey and travel audit. We had some interesting results and we hope to use this to promote alternative travel  to school.

EIRCODE PROJECT- Our eircode project gave lots of information about travelling to school. We learned that 78% of pupils travel to school by car. 15.27% walk to school. 6.87% park and stride. We also looked at distances travelled to school and learned that 33% live less than 1KM from school, 48% live 1-2KM from school and 21% of children live more than 2KM from school.

Some Travel ideas.........

FAB FEB- Park and Stride to school at least one day in the week. February brings the Spring and children can look out for signs on their way to school.

MARCH- Scoot to School.....very popular in lots of schools, children who own scooters might consider scooting to school on one day of the week......more details of these initiatives will be on this webpage.
