Green Schools 2016/'17

Welcome to the GREEN SCHOOL page.

This year we hope to get our third Green Flag which is WATER. The committee already had their first meeting and great plans are underway.

To get the flag we have to complete seven steps which include audits, meter readings and monitoring, action plans, awareness days, competitions. We have lots of work already done and all activities can be viewed on our Notice Board in the Halla.

Water Explorers Water and Food Award  - A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the Water Masters of fifth/sixth class. They were recently nominated to represent Ireland for the great project work they have done in raising awareness about  the importance of WATER. The GREAT NEWS came on Friday evening that our school WON out of nineteen schools from around the world!!! We hope to video some of the work and activities in the coming days and our video will be shown at the awards ceremony in BEIJING, CHINA!!!! We are delighted and very proud of the Water Masters.

Green School and Winter. Our Green team are on patrol every day making sure we are conserving energy and water. Great efforts are being made to recycle paper from the scrap boxes in each room. All lunch wrappers and leftovers are taken home. This is a great help to keeping our school green and clean. 

Water Masters (November). Excitement is building as the Water Masters are preparing to make their video for their award ceremony.

December News- The green School Committee are busy preparing for Colette Creedons visit in January. Colette will assess our work for the Water Flag. At assembly we are giving tips in recycling and energy saving to promote a green Christmas. We are also looking for mobile phones for recycling.

December 13th- Today Peter O Callaghan and the Water Masters made a video of their work with Water Explorers. We had great fun with the different sketches and finishing up with our song H2O. Our video will be on the Water Explorers website and will be shown as part of our International Award for Water and Food in Beijing!! Check out our photos below 

2017- year of the flag...The New Year started with new pledges to save water, energy and reduce waste by recycling. The committee is very busy preparing for our assessment.

- In January the girls made the trip to Moorepark to take part in a Water workshop. It was very informative with some interesting workshops on offer. The group designed  their ideal eco friendly school and created their action plan for our school. The girls did a great job presenting their work to the rest of the schools.

Feb 2nd- Colette Creedon from Cork Co. Council visited our school to assess the work done in our Green School. The committee was excellent. They gave a thorough and very confident presentation using maps, charts, photographs, surveys, video. Colette put us through our paces and was highly impressed with our achievements so far. All of our work is on display on our Green School Notice Board in the Halla

Feb 16th- A big THANK YOU to the committee members who promoted our Green School on OPEN NIGHT. 

Water Explorer WAFA Presentation- March 20th was a fantastic day in our school. Our Water Masters received their international Water Air Food Award from environmentalist Ayrton Cable. Ayrton and his Dad Paul arrived from London and were accompanied by Water Explorer Reps Grainne and Aoife from Dublin. The Water Masters presented their projects, showed their video and slide show and finished up with their H2o song. The girls were then presented with their award and a cheque for 500 euro. We are all very proud of the class and all the hard work was well worth it.!!

GREEN FLAG award- Congratulations and well done to the Green School Committee. We have been notified of our third green flag for  water. The award ceremony will take place in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Cork on May 11th. Further details later.

June 23rd - Today we raised our third green flag for Water. I am very proud of our committee who spoke at the event. We also listened to Ellen o Sullivan fro Kanturk Tidy Towns who explained the meaning of the Green School logo. A big thanks to our guests- Dr Elsa, environment scientist, Andrew from Inland fisheries, Jack from Water Power and especially to Nuala O Riordan who raised our flag.

We will form a new committee in September to begin our quest for our fourth flag. Have a GREEN summer!!
