Hello from Rang 4 Rang 5
Well by now we are back at another very busy school year. A very special welcome to my new 4th class who made the short journey from Mrs. Murphy's room. It's also great to see familiar faces of 5th class.
We hope to have a fun-filled, action-packed year ahead.
Credit Union Art competition is already underway with somelovely entries already finished.
Green School- Our 4th/5th committee will be working hard with lots of activities planned for the new year. We have already been out in the town with Tidy Towns members Ellen and Mary in the national "Make my Way" day. The class highlighted the great work being done to help accessibility in our town and also areas that could be improved.
STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The girls got really stuck in in their bridges project and the results were a great success. We will be doing lots more projects during the year
October- A very busy month in our class with our Whole School Evaluation. Well done to 4th and 5th class who worked very hard at this time.
Halloween Competition- We had a great number of entries for our re-cycling competition. Alot of thought and planning went into the ideas. Well done everybody.
November- On November 13th, we celebrated Science Week in our class by going to UCC. A wonderful "Surprising Science" show gave the children a different angle on Science. This was followed by a walking tour of UCC campus where the girls were given some interesting information on the history of the college. they checked out the famine house and the crawford observatory which houses some great telescopes. Our day finished with a talk and demo on forensic science in the Kane building. check out our pics below. On Friday, to conclude Science Week, we are taking part in workshops on microbiology.
December- This month is very busy as the class are the leaders for Green School Action Day. Lots and lots of activities are planned for all classes.
Thanks to the girls who took part in the sing along for the senior citizens.
We are also preparing for our carol singing at the Credit Union before the holidays.
Marine Flag Action Day- Dec 6th 2018. We had a fantastic day, thanks to the brilliant work done in my class to promote awareness of the marine environment and what we can do to help protect it. it was a day full of fun and interesting games and activities for ALL classes in the school. The 4th/5th girls made a huge effort to make our day successful. They worked in small groups to organise suitable activities for everybody - obstacle courses, A-Z puzzle, Save the Whale, marine Catch, Rubbish Relay, Drama, Stories, Recycling Games. We finished up with a very interesting powerpoint presentation from Eva and Shakira in 6th class. Well done girls. We hope that everybody enjoyed the activities and learned something new about our Blue Planet.
This term is very busy with swimming lessons, music. We also have Brendan Joyce visiting from Co. Leitrim to talk to the classes about the importance of bees in our environment. Brendan was great and gave a very entertaining talk along with bringing the hives and equipment for beekeeping. Heritage in Schools speaker Sean Keneally came to our school to talk about birds in our environment and in particular the peregrine falcon.
Clicnews- Following on from the schools success in achieving the Digital Schools Distinction, we were invited to give a presentation on our experience using the website "clicnews". On Saturday 2nd March, ten girls from the class, along with myself and Geri O Connell (parent) headed for Athlone to the CESI annual conference. (computers in education society of Ireland). The girls did a wonderful job in their presentation to primary and secondary school teachers. They were very enthusiastic and the websites designer Ian Roller from DIT was also present to add his input . I think the girls really enjoyed their trip and it provided great opportunity to practice public speaking.
