1916 Easter Rising Commeration Nov. '15


Receiving our National Flag in the Convent of Mercy Primary Schol Kanturk Friday 13th November, 2015.

A National Flag was delivered to the Girls School as part of initiatives to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising.

A ceremony took place and members of the Defence Forces  Sergeant Chris Hoare and Gunner Noel presented the flag and read the Proclamation to pupils and teachers. They  also gave background information on the symbolisim of the Tricolour and the etiquette attached to its display and storage.

In addition to the National Flag and the 1916 Proclamation, the Defence Forces also delivered a pack for each school, containing a booklet on how to care for the Flag; a poster of Amhrán na bhFiann and our National Anthem.  The format for the visit to our school was as follows: 

  1. Arrival of the Defence Forces team at the school: welcome and introduction
  2. The 1916 Proclamation in context.
  3.  Reading of the Proclamation, with a  Aimee Murphy  reading the 4th paragraph.
  4. The National Flag - Q & A for the students on our Flag.
  5.  Flag Protocols how we should care for our National Flag.
  6.  Presentation of the Flag to Lauren Creed by Sergeant Hoare
  7.  Poem read by Mathea Scanlon
  8.  Sang and played music of the National Anthem. 
  9.  Tea & Coffee and Tri colour iced cakes 

We enjoyed the morning and especialy the  soldiers who visited.
